Persian Speedwell, Veronica persica

Persian Speedwell
Veronica persica

- Mighty Little Blue Flower -

A few weeks ago I was wandering across some fields with my new canine pal, Augie, when I came across a spectacular tiny blue flower, Persian Speedwell. This minuscule flower could easily be overlooked, simply a dash of blue hue in a myriad of colors. But upon close inspection and appreciation, this flower is vibrant in color and beautiful in shape.

Persian speedwell is a non-native species, originating in Eurasia. According to information provided by Consider-the-Lilies.org, this little flower’s name is of religious derivation. During Medieval times, it seems, this little flower reminded folks of the Veil of Veronica. The plant was also considered to have medicinal attributes to heal people quickly, “speed-well”.

Whether you consider this specimen to be an invasive weed or an exceptional wildflower, it deserves appreciation. It is both a drop of color in a bucolic landscape and a unique living organism of individual character.

Note: It may be possible that this flower is actually the exceedingly similar corn speedwell, Veronica arvensis.
