Common Garter Snake, Thamnophis sirtalis

Common Garter Snake
Thamnophis sirtalis

Hiding in the autumn leaves

Halloween is the celebration of all things spooky. And, for many folks snakes are included among their lists of spooky creatures. (In fact, the fear of snakes,
called ophidiophobia, is one of the most common phobias) So, I thought it would be appropriate to share this little common garter snake hiding in autumn leaves.

New York State is home to 17 snake species and the common garter snake is the most common and least dangerous. They are venomous but only to small amphibians and other prey. Their best defense against humans is secreting a foul odor or musk from their "postanal glands." When my brother and I were little we thought this musk was "snake pee." After having experienced that most noxious odor, I've never handled a garter snake again. It's best, like many of nature's creatures, to let them be and leave them alone.

I'm gonna get you!
