NO MONSTER POWER LINES

No Monster Power Lines

- An Atrocity in Paradise -

This post will be a departure from the usual observation of a select species. This time I will take the opportunity to champion the efforts of a grass roots populist movement: No Monster Power Lines. For those of you outside of the Hudson Valley Region of New York, this movement is probably of little concern but the idea of democracy in action should always be recognized and respected.

Electricity generated in Western and Northern New York, such as Niagara Falls, supplies the source of this Great State's electricity demand. But, more than half of the State's population is located in the very southern corner of State: Westchester, New York City and Long Island. As a result, in New York, and throughout the world, large towers call stanchions are erected to support power lines which convey electricity from its sources to the consumers. During the 1970s, a network of these stanchions were constructed across the State seizing private land under the auspices of eminent domain. As seen above, a piece of my Paradise was victim of this policy. Now, four decades later, New York is gearing up to destroy viewscapes, property values and quaintness of bucolic communities along the eastern side of the Hudson River. This time with even taller monstrosities.

The No Monster Power Lines grassroots movement is "fighting to ensure that NY State energy grid upgrades minimize adverse effects on Hudson Valley people, property, scenic viewsheds, and way of life." No independent study has shown a need for new conveyance lines. The current public service commission is not working with other commissions in the State that are seeking to develop alternative methods to meet energy needs. Supporters of No Monster Power Lines do not purport any radical measures. No Monster Power Lines wants to preserve the integrity of rural New York and meet New York's energy goals through innovate and alternative designs.
